We were contacted by a customer in Harrogate who required a solution to a Wi-Fi issue they had in a new garden room office, the office was approximately 50 metres away from the main house so the Wi-Fi signal was non-existent, we arranged to call out and carry out a free site survey to see if we could come up with a cost effective solution that would give them enough Wi-Fi signal to work from home using video chat and all the associated things that come with home office.
When we arrived, we realised that a hard-wired solution wasn’t an option (this is running an ethernet cable from the Wi-Fi router in the main house to the outbuilding) as there is bridle path that runs between the garden and house so the only option was to beam the signal across using a point to point Wi-Fi bridge. This entails using a sender that is installed on the main house and a receiver that is positioned on the outbuilding.
How it all works
These TP-Link Omada 5GHz Long Range PTP Kit 867Mbps Ethernet interface are housed in a weather-resistant access panel, this unit then usually fastens onto a mast fixed externally.That interface provides the access point with both power and data.
If you have a Power over Ethernet (PoE) switch already, you can use it to feed your AP just like you would a camera or other device. If you don’t have a PoE switch, you can just use the PoE injector included the injector has one AC power plug that plugs into a domestic plug socket, one “Data” Ethernet port that you plug into your network, and one Power + Data Ethernet port that goes to the AP.
On the remote side, things work just the same. You use either a PoE switch or the included injector to power and feed the access point. If you’re using the injector, the “Data” port can be plugged into a single device directly or plugged into a switch to feed a whole network. We plugged this into an access point to give Wi-Fi as well.
The installation of the sender requires an ethernet cable with power inserter PoE to be connected to the router in the house, this is then run externally to the sender.
The receiver is then positioned on the outbuilding with a line of sight to the sender and is cabled with another ethernet cable into the outbuilding where we connected it to a Wi-Fi access point and a network access point for LAN.
A professional installation would usually have the sender and receiver mounted on a mast fixed into the wall to ensure a good fixing and also so all the equipment is weatherproof.
Before we carried out the installation we did a speed test in the main house the speed was 29 Mbps download and 3.50 upload ,on completion we did a speed test in the outbuilding office we had 27Mbps upload and 3.26download so very little difference , we also found as we had installed a wireless access point that there was good speed in another outbuilding and up to 25Mbps around 30mtrs radius of the garden office.
